JEA’s Big Idea: Raise the Rates Again

We noticed the JEA board is meeting Tuesday to discuss raising electric, water and sewer rates. Go figure.

This seems to be the only move any government-related entity knows how to make anymore: raise them up – rates, taxes, fees, whatever can get raised – gets raised!

JEA says it needs the increase to cover revenue gaps — 6% on the electric side and 8% on the water/sewer side — with the average combined customer bill rising from $231.67 to $239.83 if approved.

But out here in the real world, people are already struggling to pay electric and sewer/water bills.

Instead of reaching into the ratepayers’ pockets again, how about looking for waste, inefficiencies and better ways to run the place?

Eye on Jacksonville has recently given JEA a bit of a pass because City Hall’s investigation into its leadership looked more like political theater than serious oversight.

But this?

This does not get a pass.

It is the same old, same old: raise the rates.

Hey, JEA board members — do you have any other ideas for the ratepayers or are you just going to Vote Yes because the staff told you it’s the only way?

Just asking.
