I have a question: What is going on with the U.S. Postal Service?
In recent months, I have had several pieces of mail returned to me — birthday cards and handwritten thank-you notes — stamped with those yellow “Unable to Deliver” stickers.
The problem? The addresses were correct.
So yesterday I decided to go to the post office myself. I was also mailing two more thank-you cards and figured dropping them directly at the post office might give them a fighting chance.
It had been years since I had actually walked into a post office.
First surprise: the outdoor mail drop boxes were gone. The staff told me they took them out because people were trying to break into them!!
Second surprise: the landscaping was overgrown and neglected.
Then I walked inside.
The lobby was filthy. Not messy. Filthy. I didn’t want to touch anything.
There wasn’t a customer in sight, so I walked straight to the counter. To their credit, the employees were very nice.
I showed one of them my returned mail and explained that the addresses were correct.
Her response?
“We are hearing that a lot lately.”
That got my attention.
She explained that the mail is sorted elsewhere and gave me an 800 number to call. I will call it and see what happens.
But somebody needs to take a serious look at the Postal Service — its delivery performance AND the condition of these taxpayer-supported facilities.
President Trump ought to walk unannounced into a few post offices around America. If he sees what I saw, I suspect he won’t be happy.
Yes, fewer people use traditional mail today. But I still believe in handwritten birthday cards and thank-you notes. They are personal. They matter.
And when the Postal Service sends them back even though the address is correct, the recipient doesn’t know that. They simply think you forgot them.
And here was the irony I couldn’t ignore:
I couldn’t find an outside drop box for my two greeting cards — but drop boxes for ballots during election time suddenly appeared everywhere.
That raises a fair question: If ordinary first-class mail addressed correctly is being returned as undeliverable, shouldn’t Americans be demanding answers about Postal Service reliability across the board?
We need an audit of USPS service, delivery failures, maintenance standards and the condition of facilities purchased and maintained with public money.
Something is badly wrong at the post office.
And somebody needs to start paying attention.
