Can You Believe This? Your Tax Dollars Could Pay for Tattoos, Theme Parks and Vaping

Every once in a while, a news story comes along that makes you stop, reread the headline and ask:

Can you believe this?

News4JAX reports that Florida is moving to prohibit Temporary Cash Assistance benefits from being used to directly purchase things including tobacco and vaping products, video games, theme-park tickets, entertainment subscriptions, tattoos, spa services, tanning and even psychic and fortune-telling services.

Wait.

We needed a government rule to say taxpayer-funded assistance should NOT pay for tattoos, theme parks, vaping and fortune tellers?

While hardworking Americans are standing in grocery-store aisles adding up what they can afford, watching the gas pump tick higher and trying to keep up with insurance, utilities, mortgages and taxes, government assistance programs apparently still needed guardrails spelling out that public assistance is supposed to be used for necessities.

What happened to common sense?

Temporary assistance should absolutely be there for people who truly need a hand. Americans have always helped neighbors through difficult times. But there is a tremendous difference between helping someone get back on their feet and creating government programs with so few safeguards that taxpayers have to wonder where their money is going.

And that brings us to the bigger question:

Can we find a government program anywhere that isn’t wasting, mismanaging or losing some portion of our money?

If you know of a government agency treating every taxpayer dollar as carefully as the family who earned it, please speak up. We’d genuinely like to hear about it.

Because Americans are tired of discovering another loophole, another boondoggle, another fraud scheme and another pile of taxpayer dollars being treated like Monopoly money.

Florida says these new restrictions are about restoring accountability while continuing assistance for families who genuinely need it. Good. More of that, please.

Perhaps this breaking news should serve as another wake-up call.

There was a time when America celebrated hard work, personal responsibility, neighbors helping neighbors and government officials who understood that taxpayer money belonged to the taxpayers.

Maybe it’s time we expected that again.
