Jacksonville’s Own Susie Wiles Honored — And Donald Trump Made Sure the Nation Saw It

Jacksonville’s own Susie Wiles has long been known as the steady hand in the room — strategic, disciplined, fiercely loyal, and rarely interested in the spotlight. But this week, the spotlight found her anyway.

At the Independent Women’s Forum gala in Washington, D.C., Wiles received the prestigious Woman of Valor Award in a rare public appearance that drew some of the biggest names in the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump appeared by video tribute to personally congratulate the woman many credit as one of the architects behind his political comeback. In classic Trump fashion, he didn’t hold back — calling her “one of the best White House Chiefs of Staff ever in history.”

For Jacksonville natives, we were extra proud of her too.

Before the national headlines, before the White House, before the history books, Wiles was part of the Jacksonville political landscape. She served as chief of staff to former Jacksonville Mayor John Delaney and built a reputation here as someone who knew how to organize chaos, navigate tough political waters, and get things done without needing applause.

That reputation eventually carried all the way to the top levels of American politics.

Today, she serves as the first female White House Chief of Staff in U.S. history — a role that requires toughness, trust, and the ability to manage constant political firestorms.

Yet despite holding one of the most powerful positions in the world, Wiles still operates much the same way many Jacksonville insiders remember her: low-key, strategic, and focused on the mission rather than the fame.

The gala also revealed another side of Wiles that many Americans may not have known. During the evening, discussion turned to her recent cancer diagnosis and treatment. President Trump praised her resilience and said she was “winning it decisively.”

Politics aside, there is something admirable about seeing a hometown figure rise to the highest levels of government while maintaining the grit and discipline that got her there in the first place.

Jacksonville has produced athletes, business leaders, military heroes, and entrepreneurs. But this week, one of our own was honored on a national stage not for celebrity — but for competence, loyalty, and perseverance.

In a political world full of noise, Susie Wiles built influence quietly.

And sometimes those are the people who end up making the biggest difference.

Congratulations, Susie!
