Recently, Eye on Jacksonville published an article encouraging newly elected City Council President Nick Howland to quickly resolve the ongoing tensions surrounding Cecil Airport and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.
After the article appeared, Nick reached out directly to share his perspective on the situation.
Whether readers agree with him or not, we believe it is only fair that his side of the story be heard.
Too often today, public disagreements immediately descend into social media name-calling, assumptions, and accusations. Instead, Nick took the time to explain why he has been pushing for changes related to Cecil Airport and Cecil Spaceport.
According to Nick, his efforts have focused on job creation, economic development, aerospace recruitment, and aviation training opportunities that could benefit veterans, graduating high school students, and the broader Jacksonville economy. He points out that after two years of attempting to work within the system, he pursued budget changes through City Council and ultimately sponsored state legislation clarifying the Jacksonville Aviation Authority’s responsibility for economic development at Cecil.
That legislation passed unanimously in both chambers of the Florida Legislature and now awaits the Governor’s signature.
Nick also pushed back on characterizations that he has acted as a “bully,” noting that he has not called for special investigative committees or demanded resignations, but instead worked through legislative and budgetary channels available to elected officials.
At Eye on Jacksonville, we are less interested in personalities and more interested in outcomes. Reasonable people can disagree about strategy, governance, or who is right in a particular dispute. What matters is that citizens have access to information from all sides and can make informed decisions for themselves.
We appreciate Nick taking the time to share his perspective. Public service is not easy, and public disagreements are rarely as simple as they appear on social media.
As this issue continues to unfold, we hope all parties involved remain focused on the same goal: creating opportunities, growing Jacksonville’s economy, and serving the taxpayers who ultimately have a stake in the outcome.
That’s a goal everyone should be able to support.
