On Feb. 5, the website TrumpRx.gov went live at a press conference. Trump RX is a website that reveals the prices for 43 drugs. The site doesn’t allow you to buy the drugs directly, but it either provides a coupon or directs you to another site to purchase the drugs.
This website has raised several questions that need to be answered!
Why is the Federal Government getting involved in the prescription drug market?
The answer is that the U.S. is massively overpaying for prescription drugs, and patients can’t afford the medicines they need.
We are paying almost three times what other comparable countries pay for prescription drugs. The United States has 5% of the world’s population but accounts for 75% of the profits of large pharmaceutical companies. In 2024, the U.S. spent $805 billion on pharmaceuticals. This means that we are overspending by about $500 billion.
How will TrumpRx lower costs?
The president has engaged with the 17 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, and 16 of them have agreed to offer the US the lowest prices that they offer any other country, or most-favored nation or MFN pricing.
How many medications are on the TrumpRx website?
There are 43 drugs on the website, and more will be added. The initial group of drugs includes those from the initial five drug companies that reached an MFN pricing agreement with the president. The companies are AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer.
There is a selection of medications that treat common conditions such as diabetes, asthma, infertility, and hormonal therapy.
Is TrumpRX the best solution for all patients?
It is the best option for patients who are paying cash for their prescription drugs. This includes patients who are uninsured, have a high deductible, or have co-insurance. You should always compare the prices on the website to what you would pay with your insurance.
Does TrumpRx have the lowest price for the 43 drugs on the site?
There are tremendous savings on many drugs, but you should also check whether a generic is available. If a generic is available, you should check CostPlusDrugs.com and GoodRx.com for their prices as well. For example, Protonix is $200.10 on TrumpRx.gov, and generic Protonix is $6.36 on CostPlusdrugs.com.
What medications are on sale at a great deal on TrumpRx.gov?
The diabetes and weight-loss drugs are being sold at a great discount:
- Wegovy pill ranges in price from $149 to $299, depending on the dose, versus a list price of $1,349
- Zepbound ranges from $299 to $449, depending on the dose versus a list price of $1,087
The infertility drug Gonal F is used in IVF and is sold for the following prices:
- Strength 300 IU for $168 versus a list price of $966.04
- Strength 450 IU for $252 versus a list price of $1,449.06
- Strength 900 IU for $504 versus $2,898.12
Do the prices you pay through TrumpRx.gov get applied to your health insurance deductible?
No, except for those who live in Texas and Tennessee. This is why you need to check the drug prices through your insurance plan and see what is in your best interest.
Why am I excited about TrumpRx?
I am most excited that the president has addressed the issue of unaffordable prescription drugs in the US. He has put tremendous time and energy into this project, and this is just the beginning of his campaign to lower our drug costs. He has made great strides in getting the major pharmaceutical companies to lower their prices.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding TrumpRx.gov or about drug pricing.
