In recent news, the popular grocery chain Publix has taken steps to reinforce its long-standing policy regarding pets in its stores. New signs have been placed in Publix stores across Florida, explicitly stating, “No pets allowed – only service animals.” While this policy has been in effect since 2020, the addition of new signs serves as a reminder of the company’s commitment to maintaining this important standard.

Service Dogs are specially trained to assist individuals with disabilities in performing tasks that their owners cannot do independently. Service dogs are legally protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are allowed access to public places, including stores, restaurants, and other establishments.

National Dog Day is this week and many of us really love our dogs and want to take them with us wherever we go. It’s fun to see them out and about and who doesn’t like seeing a dog sitting in a cart looking cute and sweet. But…reality is this. It isn’t sanitary and grocery stores need to be extra clean and healthy to protect our food sources. Now that’s not a slam to dogs – it just makes sense to not bring your pet to the grocery store with you.

Additionally, it is unethical and illegal to claim your pet is a service animal. So be a good pet owner and do the right thing.
