On the Ballot: Florida Amendment 6 analyzed by Jerry Holland

Amendment 6 was placed on the ballot by the Florida Legislature.

Amendment 6, if approved, would provide that the homestead property tax discount for veterans with permanent combat-related disabilities (as determined by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs), carry over to the veteran’s surviving spouse who holds legal or beneficial title to, and permanently resides on, the homestead property, until he or she remarries or sells or otherwise disposes of the property. The discount may also be transferred to a new homestead property of the surviving spouse.

The current discount is related to discount on the veterans homestead property tax equal in proportion to the amount of disability (as determined by the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs). No one in the Florida House or Senate voted against placing the amendment on the ballot.

The amendment is opposed by the League of Women Voters because they oppose reducing any property tax revenue.

If you want the surviving spouse of a deceased permanent combat-related disabled veteran to retain that benefit, VOTE YES.

If you want the benefit to not pass to the spouse, as written in current law, VOTE NO.

This amendment like all amendments would require a 60% approval by voters to become law.
