The City of Jacksonville has announced its annual Pride Month celebration, scheduled for June 26 at City Hall. The event, hosted by the City and the Mayor’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, will feature speeches, presentations, and live performances as part of the city’s recognition of Pride Month.
At Eye, we believe celebrations can be a wonderful thing. Communities come together to recognize achievements, honor history, and build relationships. However, this announcement raises a question that many of our readers—both gay and straight—have discussed with us over the years: What exactly should government be celebrating?
For some, Pride Month is about recognizing the contributions, struggles, and history of LGBTQ+ Americans. Others view it differently. They question whether government entities should be involved in recognizing or promoting any category based on sexual orientation, believing that government should remain neutral on personal lifestyle choices and focus instead on serving all citizens equally.
This is not a question about the worth or value of any individual. Every person deserves dignity, respect, and equal treatment under the law. Rather, it is a question about where government should draw the line when it comes to official recognition and celebration.
If government celebrates one group’s identity, should it celebrate every group’s identity? If so, where does that end? These are legitimate questions in a diverse society, and reasonable people can arrive at different answers.
As always, Eye welcomes respectful dialogue. We know many readers support events such as this, while others believe government should stay out of matters related to personal identity altogether especially when our taxpayers resources are used.
So we ask our readers: What do you think? Should government-sponsored celebrations recognize specific identity groups, or should government remain neutral and focus solely on serving all citizens equally?
We invite your thoughts.

People suffer through many things in this life, and it is very important how we cope through suffering. Many people become stronger through faith, and some languish by becoming dependent or lashing out. The lifestyles of the LGBTQ community distort their natural sexuality because of abuse, neglect and traumatic events in their lives. This evolves into a disassociation disorder which in turn can cause a new series of pain and unfulfillment and at times
their own destruction. Sexual perversion is a condition or behavior that is a societal ill and is nothing to be proud of. It is a shame that society seems to want to enable this social ill and not try to get at the root causes so these unfortunate souls can be free of their bondage of sexual perversion.
Thank you Calvin for commenting. We appreciate you and your thoughts!
This type of “performance” is totally inappropriate for the setting. It is celebrated to the exclusion of other events, which represent the general public.
Thanks Barbara. I feel you are right!
