New Driver’s License? Don’t Forget Your Voter Registration

There’s an important change happening in Florida that many voters may not realize could affect their election records.

Jerry Holland is urging Duval County voters to check and update their voter registration information if they have recently received a new Florida driver license or state ID card.

Why? Because Florida recently changed the way driver license numbers are issued.

Beginning July 31, 2024, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles started implementing a new law requiring driver license and identification card numbers to include at least four randomly generated numbers. The goal is to improve security protections and help prevent identity theft.

That may sound like a technical issue — but it matters for voting.

According to the Duval County Elections Office, the driver license number on file is one of the ways election officials verify voters for:

  • voter record updates
  • petition signatures
  • vote-by-mail ballot requests

If your driver license number changed and your voter registration was not updated, it could create complications when verifying your information.

In other words: if you got a new license, don’t assume your voter file automatically updated too.

This is also a good reminder to routinely review your voter registration anytime you change:

  • your address
  • your name
  • your party affiliation
  • your signature
  • or your driver license number

In today’s world of heightened concerns over election integrity and identity theft, keeping your records current is simply smart citizenship.

Voters can update their information online through Duval Elections or by mailing a voter registration application to:

105 E. Monroe Street
Jacksonville, FL 32202

Questions about the 2026 Primary or General Election can be directed to the Duval County Elections Office at (904) 255-VOTE (8683).

Sometimes the smallest administrative details can become the biggest headaches later. This is one update worth taking a few minutes to handle now — before election season heats up.
