Americans are watching the events in Minneapolis and other parts of the nation and wondering how we got to this point.
The answer is: the Democrat Party.
More than 60 years ago, Sen. Teddy Kennedy and other Far Left Democrats came to a realization: the American electorate didn’t like Democrat policies.
Rather than making the party more amenable, they decided to change the electorate.
Americans always have welcomed immigrants. The immigration policy at that time made sense. It favored people with skills that would help build this nation and people who wanted to assimilate into American society. In other words, become Americans.
That had to change, liberal Democrats said.
The “Hart–Celler Act”, formally known as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, became federal law, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on Oct. 3, 1965. The Great Society was to become the Greater Society.
All it did was abolish the “national origins quota system” established in the 1920s, which had favored immigrants from Northern and Western Europe while restricting those from Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. This earlier system was criticized by liberals as being racially discriminatory.
Other provisions
- An annual cap of 170,000 visas for the Eastern Hemisphere
- A 20,000 per-country limit
- For the first time, a numerical cap on the Western Hemisphere (initially 120,000, without per-country limits)
LBJ played it down as non-revolutionary, predicting it would not significantly increase overall immigration or dramatically shift its sources. Johnson stated it would “not affect the lives of millions” and repair a “painful flaw” without reshaping American life.
In reality, the act had profound, long-term effects, one of them being a flood of immigrants with no assets, no education, no skills and in many cases a dislike for America and democracy.
This offered a perfect opportunity for the Democrat Party. Get them on eternal welfare, register them as Democrats, use their numbers to expand the Party’s political power, and watch the votes roll in.
Legal permanent resident admissions tripled, largely because of “chain” migration, where one person would come, then bring his entire family.
Before the new law, most immigrants came from Europe. Afterward, the majority originated from Asia, Latin America, and Africa. By the early part of this century, roughly 80 percent of immigrants arrived from these regions, reducing Europe’s share to about 20 percent or less.
Even that was not enough so Democrats decided to open the borders and let anyone in.
The foreign-born population grew from around 5 percent in 1965 to about 14 percent today. That’s 46 million potential Democrat votes.
This coincided with the Far Left’s relentless attacks on Western Civilization in academia and the media.
They want students to believe that the timeless ideas and achievements of Western Civilization, leading to the greatest leap in the standard of living in history during the Industrial evolution, were an unmitigated disaster.
They agree, essentially, with the Eastern barbarians who call America “the Great Satan.”
And, of course, “diversity” became the battle cry of the Far Left.
It was a clever plan and has succeeded beyond what Kennedy – the Lion of Chappaquiddick –anticipated, probably.
Kennedy never became president, but Donald Trump did – twice. One major reason Trump got elected was that he promised to crack down on the flood of illegal immigrants who have worsened the problem Kennedy created. Trump’s Democrat predecessors ignored that problem, while condemning it.
They knew allowing unvetted people to stream across our borders meant death and misery for many Americans, but the pursuit of power was more important to them.
The highly predictable result is Democrats rioting in the streets, fighting the police who are carrying out U.S. law in the hope of making America great again.
