The Seminole Wind Blows Forever: Florida Honors Its Own John Anderson

Every once in a while, a little news comes along that makes you smile, warms your heart, and reminds you why Florida is such a special place to call home.

Today is one of those days.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced an executive order designating “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson as Florida’s official anthem, along with plans to honor the late country music legend in his hometown of Apopka.

And the timing makes this tribute especially touching.

John Anderson, the unmistakable voice behind hits like “Swingin’,” “Straight Tequila Night,” and “Seminole Wind,” passed away on October 21, 2026, at the age of 71.

Just six days later, his beloved home state is honoring him.

A Florida Boy Who Never Forgot His Roots

Born in Apopka in 1954, Anderson grew up surrounded by the orange groves, waterways, and natural beauty of Old Florida.

He eventually headed to Nashville with a guitar and a dream. One of his early jobs was helping build the roof of the Grand Ole Opry House. Imagine that! A young man helping construct the very place where he would one day perform.

Anderson went on to become one of country music’s most distinctive voices, earning a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

But he never forgot Florida.

His 1992 hit “Seminole Wind” wasn’t just another country song. It was a love letter to Florida’s natural beauty, its history, and the importance of protecting the land and waterways that make our state so special.

A Legacy That Will Live On

The governor’s announcement includes three tributes:

  • Designating “Seminole Wind” as Florida’s official anthem.
  • Establishing historical markers in Apopka honoring Anderson’s contributions to Florida.
  • Naming the wildlife drive and trail system at Lake Apopka North Shore the John Anderson Wildlife Drive and Trail System.
