Startling vote by the ‘new’ School Board

Voters in a couple of school districts might be wondering if they voted correctly in last year’s election, following Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

But Tuesday, the board voted to send a liberal member on a junket to attend a meeting of yet another liberal organization dedicated to spending taxpayer money with little or no return.

Reggie Blount, Melody Bolduc, and Tony Ricardo all campaigned on platforms that included cutting wasteful spending.

Tuesday, Darryl Willie requested more than $5,000 to attend three meetings of the Council of Great City Schools.

The local School Board spends $62,000 a year to belong to the organization.

The council’s annual report talks of little else but sucking money out of the government trough, and pledging allegiance to woke notions such as “…the importance of protecting students from sex-based discrimination and outlining students’ rights to participate in athletics regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Board Chair Charlotte Joyce called for individual votes on each travel request, expressing why she intended to vote against the spending. She and April Carney both declared they didn’t support tax dollars being spent this way.

“I just don’t know if the bang is worth the buck,” Joyce said.

She attended one of the council’s events and said it amounted to a political rally in support of Kamala Harris.

Carney said she attended one and “it was so politically charged I had to get up and walk out of the room.”

A vote was held on the Washington trip. As expected, Willie and Cindy Pearson voted to waste the money, and they were joined by Bolduc and Ricardo. It passed 4-3.

That was a shocker.

Bolduc mumbled an explanation for her vote, but it wasn’t very explanatory.

Willie tried to defend the trips by saying he was on the executive board of the council. He should be asked to write a report afterward detailing the value he got from attending and how it benefited schoolchildren.

Willie said he thought the council “has added great value to the district.”

The March trip to Washington for an executive board meeting will cost $1,831.

The other two trips Willie wanted to take were voted down 7-1.

Joyce indicated that there would be a discussion later on the questions of membership dues and travel expenses.

The whole point in electing people who claim to be conservatives is to hold down wasteful spending and oppose nutty liberal ideas that have nothing to do with providing children a good education.

That’s what is happening in Washington, D.C. – finally – and it should be happening in Jacksonville.
