The Community Block Grant Development (CDPB) program within the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department issues grants to counties across the nation. The grants are to address low-income housing, employment, and transportation.
HUD, requires grantees to have a HUD approved consolidated plan to qualify. Currently, Clay County is asking for public input to draft this years plan. This is the second year Clay County has participated in the CDBG.
Those who live in Clay County have likely seen the bus benches popping up over the last few years. Clay County is expanding public transportation to meet grant funding requirements. Expanded public transportation sounds good, right?
The dirty little secret behind public transportation; it is unsustainable! Duval taxpayers shelled out $74,267,995.00 in 2020 to fund the Jacksonville Transportation Authority. But, when including the state and federal assistance the total subsidy was over $107,000,000.
Clay County is on track to increase the tax burden to its citizens just like Jacksonville.
