Great gun debate rages on, despite being nonsensical

Somebody’s lying.

Ownership of the city gun registry is disputed. Mayor Donna Deegan says she inherited it from Lenny Curry and Curry says, “Not me.”

But apparently for nearly two years a list has been kept of anyone visiting City Hall who was carrying a gun.

That, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis, is illegal.

The flap has metastasized and now is being investigated by the state attorney’s office and the attorney general’s office, so no one wants to talk on the record about the issue.

But the real question is, what the hell was the purpose of the list?

What did city officials plan to do with a list of people who carried guns?

It is legal to carry a handgun in Florida. More than a million Florida residents had permits when they were required but that requirement ended a year ago.

Furthermore, people who buy guns have to fill out forms that are nearly as replete with information as income tax returns. The federal government knows who has guns. If city officials wanted that information, couldn’t they ask the feds?

If they did know, what would they do then? Arrest someone for not breaking the law?

There is no apparent reason to have such a list, especially when it contains information already in government hands, except for guns obtained illegally.

There are stupid criminals, but it would be monumentally stupid to go into City Hall with an illegal firearm and willingly pass through an inspection point.

What is the purpose of an inspection point anyway if it is not to prevent people from carrying guns into City Hall?

It is only illegal to carry one into legislative chambers, which is why the city has a second inspection point outside City Council chambers.

None of it makes any sense, regardless of who ordered it to be done, but – hey – it’s government.
