Every book in government schools must be suspect

Parents of children in government schools cannot take anything for granted.

Bruce Friedman, the indefatigable watchdog and president of No Left Turn in Education in Clay County, has filed a new complaint.

Unlike hundreds of others, however, this is for a “good” book, he said.

However, because of the carelessness of the Clay County School District it contains a link to a porn site.

The book, found in six Clay schools covering grades 7 to 12, is The Running Dream.

It is about a 16-year-old girl who becomes an amputee from a school bus accident and her track teams helps her rekindle her dream of running.

Friedman found nothing wrong with the book — until he reached the “about the author” page.

There he found a link to a web site.

The site contains partially nude young women who say they are available for sexual activity.

In the complaint form he filled out, Friedman named the members of the School Board and wrote, “You own this mess. Clean it up!”

Library personnel in schools need to do their job or find work elsewhere and board members who don’t ensure they do need to be replaced by the voters.

Friedman has challenged led about 1,000 books and 500 have been removed from school bookshelves. Those favoring pornography for children are outraged but Friedman is unfazed by their ire. He’ll be submitting 70 more challenges Thursday.
