Local activist urges state leaders to support common sense

For her speech to the state Board of Education, Eye on Jacksonville is naming Kathleen Murray Citizen of the Month, the first time we have given that accolade to anyone twice. Last August we recognized Murray, executive director of the Duval County chapter of Citizens Defending Freedom, for her work in making that valued organization a recognized voice in public policy matters. She hasn’t faltered since and she didn’t hesitate to take the battle to the state board July 19.

Murray was speaking in favor of a rule requiring a teacher to use the pronouns of a student based on the student’s actual sex, not one a student might “identify” with, which is a current fad encouraged by liberals. The rule would conform with state law.

“I identify as an overtaxed, wife, mother of four, retired Naval officer who is bewildered,” she said in her 60-second speech.

Murray explained that she was bewildered that it was necessary to speak in favor of a rule that should be obvious in a world where common sense should dominate.

She also was bewildered, she said, because some time in the 24 years between her graduation from high school in Broward County and today, the public school system had become unrecognizable to her.

“And there is a Supreme Court justice, a woman, who cannot define exactly who is a woman,” she said.

Members of her organization believe in both biological science and free speech, she said.

“Normal healthy adults do not get angry when they can’t talk to children about sex. Predators and perverts do,” Murray concluded.

Each month Eye tries to recognize the work of ordinary citizens who are making the city better.
