It is common for the political party in power to lose seats and midterm elections and even to relinquish control of both houses of Congress.
Therefore, there is no reason for Americans to panic over the recent election. What is troubling is the sudden and seemingly growing affection for socialism.
America has become the greatest nation in history because of capitalism yet far too many young people revile the system and express an affinity for socialism, which they clearly don’t understand.
At the beginning of the 19th century 90% of the people in the world lived in abject poverty then came the industrial revolution, based on capital. Currently only 10% of the world’s population lives in poverty and there has been a spurt downward since spectacular failures of socialism in places such as Russia and China.
Opinions of people in the United States are based on ignorance — the result of public education indoctrinating rather than educating. it is telling that half of the students graduating with a diploma certifying that they are prepared to enter college cannot read and write at college level.
These unprepared students with malleable minds are persuaded in college by liberal professors that capitalism is somehow evil and that the pursuit of profit is immoral.
In fact the pursuit of profit is merely a manifestation of the universal human desire to improve one’s standard of living.
Bill Gates and Steven jobs wanted to improve their standard of living and devised the modern computer age. It is entirely fitting that they became frightfully rich in doing so. The key to capitalism is this: both parties mutually benefit or there is no transaction; unlike socialism you cannot be forced to participate.
Hong Kong under British rule was the freest and most prosperous city on earth. it worked so well that the red Chinese allowed capitalism to flourish in provinces adjacent to Hong Kong and after taking over Hong Kong allowed it to through that huge nation. Although it is controlled the communist nation has prospered.
College professors meanwhile are left to explain North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela using highly theoretical rhetoric and pejorative commentary concerning capitalism.
Liberals suffer from what F.A. Hayek calls “the fatal conceit.” It is that a few commissars sitting in a room have more collective knowledge than the millions of minds that make decisions in free markets.
America is resilient, still innovative and always optimistic and there’s a good chance that the latest political misfortune will be reversed.
Teaching capitalism, Americanism, history, economics and other subjects students need to know in the public schools will accelerate the recovery.
If Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan were still live they would advise, “Stay the course.”
